Gorizian lace, a traditional craft from northeastern Italy, is set to receive another moment in the national spotlight—this time at the Venice International Film Festival.

Following its prominent display at the Osaka Expo in Japan, where it is currently featured outside the Italian Pavilion among other regional artisanal excellences, Gorizian lace will next be showcased on Friday, September 5, as part of the film festival’s program.

The occasion marks the screening of Futuri Intrecci (“Future Weavings”), an 18-minute documentary directed by Christian Natoli and recently premiered at the Coronini Park during the 44th Amidei Prize. Commissioned and produced by the Fondazione Scuola Merletti—part of the regional cultural agency ERPAC—the film offers a contemporary reflection on the lace-making tradition.

In interviews, Natoli has acknowledged that he was initially unfamiliar with the world of lace. However, the process of making the documentary led to what he describes as a deep personal engagement. “I discovered a fascinating universe, both culturally and emotionally,” he said. “I now consider lace-makers to be true artists, not simply artisans.”

The documentary explores the legacy, precision, and passion behind Gorizian lacework, placing it in dialogue with modern themes and narratives. Its inclusion in the Venice festival, one of the most prestigious cultural events in Europe, is seen by organizers and cultural officials as a significant recognition of the tradition’s enduring relevance.

The screening is part of a broader effort to preserve and elevate regional heritage crafts through contemporary storytelling and international platforms.
