A new community initiative, Ciclofficina, has been launched in Trieste with the aim of promoting hands-on bicycle repair skills and encouraging sustainable mobility through reuse and recycling. The project is organized by a coalition of local associations—Bioest, Freedom Trieste, Aria – Associazione di Promozione Sociale a.p.s., Associazione Samarcanda Odv, Noi Insieme, and Associazione “Il Ponte”—in collaboration with FIAB Ulisse, the local chapter of Italy’s national cycling advocacy organization.
The initiative offers a series of free, public workshops designed to teach participants how to maintain, repair, and use their bicycles more effectively. Sessions are scheduled for Wednesday, June 25; Wednesday, July 2; and Wednesday, July 9, all at 5 p.m. The workshops will take place at Via Modiano 5, within the public park.
Led by volunteer instructors from FIAB Ulisse, the workshops welcome participants of all ages and backgrounds, including grandparents, parents, children, seasoned cyclists, and beginners. Organizers encourage attendees to bring their own bicycles, whether in working condition or not.
The program emphasizes not only practical repair skills but also the broader cultural values of reuse and recycling. Bicycles donated or brought in for repair will be fixed and made roadworthy again, offering a tangible return to service for otherwise discarded items. Organizers say the initiative goes beyond simple repair—it represents a social effort with potential benefits for local traffic safety and the promotion of environmentally friendly mobility.
Participants are expected to leave the sessions with both practical knowledge and the satisfaction of having brought a bicycle back to life—one that will return to the streets of Trieste, contributing to a more sustainable urban environment.
