On Sunday evening, the city of Trieste will observe the solemn feast of Corpus Christi with a traditional Eucharistic celebration and public procession through the city center, culminating in a blessing in Piazza Unità d’Italia.

The celebration of the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ—known in Italy as Corpus Domini—will begin with Mass at 7 p.m. in the Church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo, located at the edge of the Borgo Teresiano district. The liturgy will be followed by a procession carrying the Blessed Sacrament through the streets, accompanied by hymns and prayers.

The procession will follow a historic route through central Trieste, passing via San Spiridione, via Mazzini, via Roma, Piazza della Borsa, via del Canal Piccolo, Piazza Tommaseo, Riva III Novembre, and Riva del Mandracchio before arriving in Piazza Unità d’Italia. There, the Bishop of Trieste will deliver a homily and impart the traditional Eucharistic Benediction.

This year’s observance carries additional significance as part of the Jubilee Year dedicated to priests. The local Church describes it as an occasion to honor the vocation of the clergy—“disciples following in the footsteps of the Master,” entrusted with sharing the Gospel message and bearing witness to enduring hope.

A statement from Church authorities referenced Eucharisticum Mysterium, a 1967 Vatican instruction, emphasizing the importance of such processions as “a public testimony of faith and veneration for this sacrament.”

The musical program for the liturgy and procession will be directed by the head of the Cappella Civica of Trieste, continuing the city’s long-standing tradition of sacred music as an integral part of its religious celebrations.

The Corpus Christi procession has long been a visible and deeply rooted expression of the city’s Catholic heritage, bringing together clergy, laypeople, and civic leaders in a public act of devotion.

As with previous years, local authorities are expected to coordinate closely with Church organizers to manage road closures and ensure public safety during the event.
