Italy will mark the 79th anniversary of the founding of the Republic on Monday, June 2, with celebrations across the country, including a full day of events in the northeastern port city of Trieste.
The local ceremony, organized by the Prefecture in collaboration with the Municipality of Trieste, will be attended by Mayor Roberto Dipiazza and other civic leaders. The commemoration begins at 10 a.m. in Piazza Unità d’Italia, the city’s grand central square overlooking the Adriatic Sea, with a traditional flag-raising ceremony in the presence of local authorities.
At the same time, Italy’s national observance will take place at the Redipuglia War Memorial, where a delegation from Trieste, including the city’s official banner and Councillor for Education and Family Maurizio De Blasio, will take part in the solemn tribute to the republic’s founding.
Later in the day, at 5:30 p.m., the focus will return to Piazza Unità d’Italia for the flag-lowering ceremony, followed by a public reading of the President of the Republic’s official message to the nation.
To conclude the day’s celebrations, the Giuseppe Tartini Conservatory of Music will offer a public concert at 7 p.m. in Piazza Verdi, just steps from the city’s historic opera house. The open-air performance is expected to draw residents and visitors alike for an evening of classical music honoring the birth of the Italian Republic in 1946.
Republic Day, or Festa della Repubblica, commemorates the institutional referendum of June 2, 1946, when Italians voted to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic in the wake of World War II. The holiday is widely celebrated with military parades, cultural events, and official ceremonies throughout Italy.
