With summer fast approaching and early sun-seekers already spreading towels along the Barcola seafront, the city’s mayor has signed the annual ordinance regulating the use of the popular coastal stretch. The measures, in effect until September 30, aim to ensure public safety and order along the promenade, especially as seasonal crowds begin to gather.
The rules, which apply from the Benedetto Croce waterfront to the Bivio area, function as a beachside code of conduct, intended to prevent disorder along one of Trieste’s most frequented bathing areas.
City officials note that several sections of the promenade — specifically bathing platforms known locally as Topolini 4 through 7 — remain under repair following damage sustained during severe storms in November 2023. These areas will gradually reopen as restoration efforts are completed.
Restrictions on Beach Equipment
According to the ordinance, beach gear such as deck chairs, umbrellas, towels, surfboards, inflatable rafts, and other equipment must not be left unattended along the promenade between the hours of 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. Overnight camping, including pitching tents or makeshift shelters, is strictly prohibited.
Noise and Recreational Activities
The city is also emphasizing the need to minimize noise, particularly between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., the traditional midday rest period in Italy. Radios, speakers, and other sound-emitting devices must be used with discretion. Group games, recreational events, and fireworks displays are forbidden unless authorized by the municipality. Team sports such as soccer, volleyball, and paddle games are not permitted if they pose a risk to others or disturb the peace.
Wheeled Vehicles Banned in Bathing Zones
To ensure pedestrian safety, all types of vehicles — except those designated for cleaning and emergency services — are barred from the bathing area. This includes bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and rollerblades.
Hygiene Facilities and Use
The ordinance is expected to include standard provisions regarding the use of showers and public hygiene facilities, although details were still being finalized at the time of publication.
As in previous years, the ordinance serves as both a practical guide and a reminder of shared responsibility in maintaining a safe and pleasant environment along one of the city’s most cherished summertime locations.
