A theatrical production exploring the harrowing experiences of war correspondents drew regional officials and a full audience Friday evening at the Teatro Stabile del Friuli Venezia Giulia in Trieste. The performance, titled Gli occhi della guerra (The Eyes of War), features journalists Fausto Biloslavo and Gian Micalessin recounting their work from various conflict zones around the world.
Accompanied by archival footage and narration by actors Francesco Migliaccio and Adriano Giraldi, the production offered an immersive look into the challenges and ethical complexities of frontline reporting.
Among those in attendance were Mario Anzil, vice governor of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and delegate for culture, along with regional assessors Fabio Scoccimarro and Alessia Rosolen.
“This event is especially meaningful because it helps us understand the realities of contemporary society and how to interpret them—a crucial step in preparing for the future,” Anzil said following the performance.
The region continues to support high-profile cultural initiatives through partnerships with local institutions like the Teatro Stabile, Anzil noted. He also underscored Trieste’s historic role in the field of war journalism.
“Trieste has been home to a true school of war reporting, built on a deep and recognized tradition,” he said. Anzil paid tribute to Almerigo Grilz, an Italian journalist from Trieste who was the first reporter from the country to be killed in a post–World War II armed conflict. “He is a symbolic figure who represents the identity and courage of this profession,” Anzil said.
The vice governor also expressed his appreciation to Paolo Valerio, director of the Rossetti theater, for staging what he described as a powerful and memorable performance. “This is one of those moments we’ll look back on with pride, saying: I was there that night,” he concluded.
