Thousands of people marched through the streets of Trieste on Friday in a demonstration organized by CGIL, one of Italy’s largest trade unions, to advocate for stronger public healthcare.

The procession began at Largo Barriera and continued to Piazza Oberdan, where closing speeches were scheduled. Organizers estimated attendance at over 5,000 people, while local police put the figure closer to 3,000. Participants came from across the Friuli Venezia Giulia region.

The demonstration is part of a broader campaign by CGIL to raise awareness about challenges facing Italy’s national healthcare system, including staffing shortages, long wait times, and concerns about reduced access to care.
