The regional government has officially established the Carso-Kras Geopark, a move seen as the first step toward securing UNESCO recognition. Approved by the council on the recommendation of Environmental Protection Councilor Fabio Scoccimarro, the initiative defines the geopark’s boundaries and management framework.

“This is an important first step toward the creation of a cross-border geopark,” Scoccimarro said. “Our broader goal is to have this transnational entity recognized as part of UNESCO’s global geopark network.”

The geopark includes multiple municipalities, among them Trieste, Duino Aurisina, Monfalcone, and Sgonico. Management will be handled by the Geological Service of the Central Directorate for Environmental Protection, with potential partnerships with local governments.

Plans for the site focus on conservation, education, research, and geotourism, aiming to promote sustainable development while preserving its geological and cultural heritage. The administrative headquarters will be housed within the regional Geological Service, while the operational center will be based at the Basovizza Naturalistic Educational Center in Trieste.

A network of municipalities within the geopark has also been created to coordinate initiatives and facilitate community involvement. Officials will now work on a strategy to enhance the area’s environmental and cultural assets, laying the foundation for a future UNESCO candidacy.
