The Barcolana Village, a central feature of Europe’s largest sailing regatta, opened along Trieste’s waterfront on Wednesday, drawing crowds of visitors eager to explore its numerous offerings. This year’s event, which has grown substantially over the past decade, features high-tech exhibition spaces and culinary stalls showcasing the city’s blend of maritime tradition and modernity.
Mitja Gialuz, president of the Barcolana’s organizing committee, officially opened the village, reflecting on the event’s significant growth. “When I started ten years ago, we were 40 organizers; today, there are 700,” Gialuz said. He emphasized the importance of engaging not just Trieste but the wider region through initiatives that bring “the sea and its values” to every corner of the city.
The village features a special exhibit celebrating the 50th anniversary of Solaris, a renowned Italian yacht manufacturer, with a boat displayed in the city square. Gialuz called the display “a dream come true,” symbolizing Trieste’s connection to the sea.
Other highlights include the Para Sailing Academy’s initiative to offer people with disabilities the chance to experience sailing, underscoring the sea’s role as a place of inclusion. The day’s events also featured “We are all superheroes” and the boat race “Rowing for the Future,” with dragon boats adding a dramatic flair to the competition.
Barcolana continues to be a key event in Trieste’s cultural and social calendar, further strengthening the city’s maritime heritage.
