As the 56th edition of the Barcolana Regatta approaches, the Municipality of Trieste has announced crucial updates on parking and transportation to facilitate access to the city’s waterfront events, drawing sailing enthusiasts from around the globe.

The Barcolana, one of the world’s largest sailing races, will see tens of thousands of visitors flock to the historic port city from October 12 to 13. In anticipation of this influx, Michele Babuder, the city’s Councillor for Territorial Policies, outlined a comprehensive parking plan to accommodate visitors traveling from various parts of the city and beyond.

Parking for Visitors from the North

For those arriving from the north, via the scenic Strada Costiera-Barcola route, the city has designated several key parking areas, including:

  • Piazzale 11 Settembre in Barcola;
  • Bovedo parking lot;
  • The parking lot at the Congress Center, located near the Porto Vecchio entrance roundabout;
  • Additional spaces near the Congress Center, including the area adjacent to Warehouse 28;
  • Saba Silos, a multi-story parking facility;
  • Interparking on Via Flavio Gioia, located close to the Trieste train station.

To further ease access, local transit operator Trieste Trasporti has increased public transport services, with a focus on bus routes connecting Barcola, Miramare, and the Porto Vecchio area. Bus line No. 6 will run more frequently along Viale Miramare, and on October 12 and 13, bus line No. 36 will extend its route into Porto Vecchio.

Parking for Visitors from the South

For those traveling from the southern parts of the city, parking will be available on Via Carli. In addition, Councillor for Economic Policies Serena Tonel has secured additional parking at the city’s Fruit and Vegetable Market, with access from Via Giulio Cesare.

Traffic Restrictions and Road Closures

In preparation for the Barcolana festivities, the Municipality of Trieste has also announced a series of road closures along the waterfront. Starting on Friday, October 11, the Rive — Trieste’s bustling seafront — will be closed to vehicle traffic from:

  • 7:30 p.m. on Friday, October 11, until 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12;
  • 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, until 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 13;
  • 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 13.

The closures will affect Riva Del Mandracchio, Riva Caduti Per l’Italianità, and Riva Tre Novembre, in the section between Via di Mercato Vecchio and Piazza Nicolò Tommaseo.

These measures will be enforced subject to any additional directives from local authorities, including the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Safety (C.P.O.S.P.) and the Prefecture, ensuring public safety during one of Italy’s most iconic maritime celebrations.

As the Barcolana kicks off, visitors are encouraged to take advantage of public transportation and allow extra time for travel as they head to the event. With a rich program of regattas and cultural activities, the Barcolana promises to once again highlight Trieste’s enduring love affair with the sea.
