Italy’s regional healthcare system is poised for a significant financial boost, with over $275 million allocated for extensive upgrades and technological enhancements across key hospital hubs. This investment will channel more than $220 million into ongoing renovations at the main hospital centers in Udine, Pordenone, and Trieste, and $55 million towards modernizing technological equipment within regional health agencies.
The funds are distributed as follows: $27 million to ASU Friuli Centrale, $16 million to ASU Giuliano Isontina, $11 million to AS Friuli Occidentale, and $5 million each to IRCCS Burlo Garofolo and CRO of Aviano. These allocations were confirmed by Riccardo Riccardi, the Regional Assessor for Health, Social Policies, and Disabilities, following the approval of a key executive resolution.
The newly approved resolution establishes a framework for future investments and will be integrated into an upcoming Program Agreement between the regional and national governments, expected to total approximately $220.5 million.
Riccardi emphasized the necessity for a new Program Agreement with the Ministry of Health to facilitate these investments. “The new work and continued redevelopments at the major hospital hubs in Udine, Trieste, and Pordenone necessitate this agreement to ensure proper funding and execution,” he stated.
The total financial requirement for the Udine hospital hub, the Cattinara hospital in Trieste, and the Pordenone hospital complex amounts to $220.5 million. This includes a federal contribution of $159.7 million and regional co-financing of $60.8 million.
Planned projects include significant upgrades at ASU Friuli Centrale, such as regulatory updates to Pavilion B, demolition of Pavilion 6, and the construction of a new outpatient pavilion featuring advanced AI technologies. These initiatives alone will cost $68.2 million.
Meanwhile, the Giuliano Isontina Health Agency’s redevelopment of the Cattinara facility and the new Burlo Garofolo headquarters involves a $80.8 million investment for the Cube hospital, as well as finishing works and equipment.
The Friuli Occidentale Health Agency plans to demolish old pavilions and build a new primary and post-acute care pavilion at the Pordenone hospital complex, with a projected expenditure of $71.5 million.
