In a bustling inaugural event, Trieste’s latest initiative, the “Urban Horticulture and Greenery Path,” drew a remarkable crowd. Sponsored by the Urbi et Horti Group in collaboration with the Municipality of Trieste, Bioest Association, Legambiente Trieste, Il Ponte, and Trieste Beekeepers Consortium, the program boasts a comprehensive agenda comprising four sessions dedicated to horticulture and an equal number focusing on introductory beekeeping and environmental education.

Designed for aspiring urban gardeners and horticulturists alike, whether on a balcony or eager to engage with communal environmental concerns, the course offers free admission.

The opening session, hosted at via San Cilino, 40/2, welcomed Michele Babuder, Trieste’s Municipality Territory Policies Assessor, who underscored the pivotal role of environmental consciousness and urban greenery in the city’s fabric. Dr. Francesco Panepinto, overseeing public green spaces in Trieste, delivered a compelling discourse on biodiversity, stressing the indispensable function of urban greenery in civic landscapes. Tiziana Cimolino of Bioest eloquently emphasized the significance of Trieste’s Urban Gardens project, outlining the procedures for securing a plot or adopting green spaces within the city.

The momentum continues with the upcoming session, featuring Walmi Boccali’s insights on “Seasonality in Horticultural Operations,” scheduled for Thursday, February 29th, at 5:30 PM, hosted at via Modiano, 5, Trieste.

This initiative aims to equip participants with the tools and methodologies necessary for fostering, designing, and executing social agricultural projects on a local scale.

The curriculum comprises four two-hour training modules, totaling 8 hours of immersive learning. Each module features expert presentations complemented by interactive sessions, fostering dynamic exchanges among participants.

Upon completion of at least four modules, attendees will receive a certificate of participation.

Hands-on workshops, led by experts in agriculture, botany, and environmental conservation, will follow theoretical sessions. The practical component, guided by a seasoned Master Farmer, will cover a range of topics, from soil enrichment to harvest techniques, providing attendees with comprehensive guidance for establishing and maintaining urban gardens.

Reflecting on the transformative potential of cultivating even small plots using sustainable methods, Tiziana Cimolino asserts, “The Urban Horticulture and Greenery Path offers a gateway to a wealth of positive outcomes for individuals and the environment alike.”
