Friuli Venezia Giulia presented its scientific and innovation network at the United Nations headquarters in New York on Oct. 16, highlighting the region’s research institutions and Trieste’s role as an international center for scientific cooperation.

The presentation took place during a mission to New York and Washington from Oct. 14 to 20, led by regional governor Massimiliano Fedriga and regional councillor Alessia Rosolen. The event focused on how local and regional initiatives can contribute to the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The region highlighted a research community comprising approximately 3,800 researchers and 164 projects, according to figures reported by local outlet Diario FVG.

Fedriga described science as a potential bridge between countries, including during periods of international tension. He also pointed to the proposed UNESCO Science Hub in Trieste, supported by the Italian government, as an opportunity to establish a permanent platform for cooperation between research institutions and public authorities.

The initiative reflects the region’s efforts to strengthen its international scientific ties and promote Trieste’s established role in research and cross-border collaboration.

During the visit to the United States, the regional delegation also met with Jewish organizations. Fedriga said he expressed solidarity with Jewish communities in Europe and the United States, citing concerns about what he described as distorted communication contributing to antisemitism.
