Students at several high schools in Trieste are discussing possible school occupations, according to reporting by Il Piccolo, as student protests gain visibility across Italy and other parts of Europe.
A WhatsApp group created last Friday had attracted nearly 700 members by Monday evening, Il Piccolo reported. The group discussed possible action involving the Galvani, Carducci and other schools, including a potential occupation of one of the Carducci-Dante institute’s buildings.
No occupation had been confirmed as of Monday, and school administrators said they had not received clear indications that one was imminent. The situation was also being monitored by the prefecture, according to the newspaper.
Carmela Testa, head of the Carducci-Dante high school, acknowledged growing discussion among students but said she hoped an occupation would not take place. Francesco Fazari, head of the Nautico-Galvani institute, said he did not believe the conditions were conducive to protests similar to those reported in France. The head of the Petrarca high school had also detected no clear signs of an impending occupation, Il Piccolo reported.
Students have been following protests at schools elsewhere in Italy and France, with videos circulating on social media showing occupied classrooms and disrupted lessons.
For now, the discussions in Trieste have not resulted in a confirmed protest, leaving school administrators watching for further developments.
