Authorities in Trieste have finalized a security plan for the 58th Barcolana, the city’s annual sailing regatta, as preparations intensify for an event expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors.
The plan was approved Friday during a meeting of the Provincial Committee for Public Order and Security, chaired by Prefect Giuseppe Petronzi. The meeting brought together representatives of the Barcola and Grignano Sailing Club, regional and city authorities, police and emergency services, maritime and port authorities, the health system and other organizations involved in the event.
About 2,000 boats are expected to take part in the regatta, while organizers estimate that the event typically attracts around 500,000 people to Trieste.
The security operation will focus on managing pedestrian and vehicle traffic, crowded areas and events along the waterfront. Particular attention will be given to pedestrian routes, the Ponte Bianco and panoramic locations such as the Sanctuary of Monte Grisa, where large crowds are expected.
Authorities will also increase monitoring in the busiest areas and establish dedicated coordination for the use of drones and other aircraft.
At sea, the Port Authority will oversee safety operations, while the Guardia di Finanza’s ROAN unit will be responsible for security services. The operation will involve the State Police, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza, Fire Brigade, municipal police and emergency medical services.
This year’s crowds could be further increased by the presence of the Italian Navy’s training ship Amerigo Vespucci in Trieste, as well as cruise ships scheduled to call at the port during the Barcolana weekend.
The measures are intended to coordinate security, transportation and emergency response as the city prepares for one of its largest annual gatherings.
