The Municipality of Trieste has opened applications for a public funding program supporting projects that promote gender equality, women’s participation in society and a culture of inclusion, with submissions due by Aug. 31.

The initiative, covering 2026 and 2027, was presented Thursday by Maurizio De Blasio, the city councillor for Education and Family Policies. Officials said the program expands beyond activities traditionally associated with International Women’s Day on March 8 and the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on Nov. 25 by introducing a new focus on encouraging women’s participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The call for proposals is organized around three areas: programs promoting women in STEM through workshops, career guidance and meetings with professionals; initiatives aimed at preventing gender-based violence through education, training and public awareness campaigns; and projects celebrating women’s contributions while promoting gender equality.

City officials said particular attention would be given to projects involving young people between the ages of 14 and 35. The municipality is also collaborating with the Trieste Next science festival to provide participating initiatives with greater visibility.

Up to two projects will be selected for funding under each of the three categories. Proposals will be evaluated on their quality, innovation and ability to build partnerships within the local community.

Applications are open to registered third-sector organizations, nonprofit associations, social cooperatives and foundations with cultural or social objectives. The deadline for submissions is midnight on Aug. 31, 2026.
