More than 50 young people from across Italy gathered in Trieste on Friday for the opening of the 2026 Viaggio del Ricordo (“Journey of Remembrance”), a government-backed educational initiative exploring the history of the Julian-Dalmatian exodus, the Foibe massacres and Italy’s eastern border.
The program, organized by the Agenzia Italiana per la Gioventù with support from Italy’s Department for Youth Policies and Universal Civil Service, runs from June 26 to July 4 and combines historical site visits, meetings with witnesses and educational workshops.
Speaking at the opening ceremony in Trieste’s City Council chamber, Andrea Abodi said the initiative aims to help younger generations better understand one of the country’s most painful chapters through direct engagement with historical sites and personal testimonies. He said he would join part of the journey alongside the participants.
The itinerary includes visits to the Redipuglia Military Memorial, the Basovizza Foiba and Magazzino 26, as well as stops in Koper, Umag, Poreč, Rovinj, Pula, Opatija, Rijeka, Zadar and Split, where participants will meet members of Italian communities.
Throughout the trip, participants will also take part in the educational project Sulle tracce della memoria (“In the Footsteps of Memory”), producing written and audiovisual accounts reflecting on the role of historical memory in contemporary civic life.
