On Wednesday, May 6, the fiftieth anniversary of the 1976 Friuli earthquake, we walked through downtown Trieste to hear what locals still remember of that devastating day. Though the epicenter lay inland, the shock reached the city, leaving a lasting imprint on those who felt the ground move and saw families displaced. Many recalled the sudden silence after the tremors, the fear of aftershocks, and the solidarity that followed. Others, younger at the time, spoke of memories passed down through parents and neighbors, shaping a shared regional identity still marked by resilience and collective memory today now in Trieste today.
