There are places that serve coffee, and then there are places that define a day. In Trieste—Italy’s city of cafés, sea winds, and slow rituals—a new spot opened in 2024 with the ambition to become exactly that. Its name says everything: Local, a tribute to the land, to people, and to the simple pleasure of living well from dawn to midnight.

Set at Via Alberto Boccardi 4, a short walk from the city’s stone alleyways and sweeping waterfront, Local is one of the most recent projects of 040 Group, the hospitality company operating across Trieste, Muggia and Monfalcone, known for shaping contemporary dining experiences rooted in the region.“We wanted to create a place where every moment finds its natural home,” the team says. And indeed, from 7:30 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, the space is alive with shifting rhythms: the murmur of early risers, the hum of business lunches, the convivial buzz of the aperitivo hour, and the warm glow of dinners built on local flavors.

A Philosophy Built on Territory

Local was born with a clear vision: to be a reference point for Trieste, a place that embodies buonvivere, design, and the uncompromising quality of territorial ingredients. The inspiration comes directly from the North Adriatic region—its vineyards, its small producers, its borderland culture—and from the desire to translate all of that into an experience that feels immediate, contemporary, and deeply rooted.

Here, “local” is not a marketing label; it is a commitment. Every product has a story, every ingredient has a name and origin, and every plate is a small portrait of Friuli Venezia GiuliaIstria, and the rolling hills of the Brda region. The result is a place that doesn’t simply serve food and wine—it celebrates a heritage of roughly 300 kilometers of culture, taste, and craft.

Warm, Contemporary Design That Breathes the Land

Step inside and everything echoes the region’s earthy palette. Warm greens and browns, wide spaces, long cushioned seats, and modern furnishings create an environment that feels both designed and lived-in. A scenographic green counter greets guests at the entrance, while the eye wanders to the wine barrels, the circular table dedicated to the “vecchie matasse,” and a refrigerated counter brimming with local delicacies.

With around 100 seats, Local is spacious yet intimate, conceived not only for sitting but also for that distinct Italian form of socializing—standing with a glass of wine, moving between conversation and counter, especially during the lively aperitivo rush. It is a place that expands and contracts with the city’s energy.

An All-Day Offering: From Specialty Coffee to Regional Plates and Wines

The day begins with the aroma of Caffè Roats, the specialty coffee roasted and a cornerstone of the concept. Early commuters, remote workers, and sunrise enthusiasts find their ritual here, at marble counters or sunny windows overlooking the quiet street outside.

Lunch transitions into a gastronomic tableau that honors local excellence. The bistrot and gastronomy offerings revolve around artisanal ingredients and regional producers: mixed boards of salumi and cheeseshomemade meatballs, and dishes that bridge the flavors of FVG, Istria, and Brda with sincerity and balance. Nothing is embellished beyond what the raw materials already offer.

But the soul of Local emerges fully at dusk. As the lights warm and the music softens, the space becomes an enoteca—a vibrant one. The wine selection is one of its greatest strengths: more than 200 producers from FVG, Istria, and Brda, curated with what the team describes as “a meticulous focus on quality and terroir.” Here, every bottle is a storyteller, and every pour becomes a small journey through the North Adriatic landscape.

For Everyone, At Any Hour

Local’s charm lies in its transversal appeal. Professionals in their lunch break, travelers discovering Trieste, couples seeking an atmospheric dinner, groups of friends enjoying long aperitivi—it is a space designed for everyone, united by the desire for quality, design, and authenticity. The all-day approach breaks down barriers: you come once for breakfast and return in the evening for a glass of Vitovska or a bowl of polpette. The ambiance shifts, but the identity remains.

More Than a Venue: A Cultural Crossroads

On weekends, Local transforms into a cultural gathering point, with DJ sets and live music turning the space into a social crossroads where locals and visitors mingle. The venue collaborates with a range of local producers and associations, reinforcing its mission to be not just a place where people consume, but a place where Trieste itself lives and expresses its identity.

The ambition is bold: to become for Triestea hub of taste, culture, and community—with one critical difference: Local’s heart beats entirely with regional DNA.

A Journey Through the North Adriatic

Perhaps Local’s greatest triumph is its ability to transform a meal, a coffee, or a glass of wine into a journey through one of Europe’s most unique border regions. This is a landscape where languages mingle, where vineyards cling to limestone terraces, where small artisans guard centuries-old traditions.

Local brings that world to the table—literally. And it invites every guest, whether Triestine or visiting, to savor it slowly.
