Italy’s high-speed rail network is expected to face disruptions on Wednesday, March 11, as employees of the private train operator Italo stage a nationwide strike.
The industrial action, scheduled to begin at 9:01 a.m. and end at 4:59 p.m., “may lead to changes to service, including before and after its conclusion,” according to a statement issued by the state rail infrastructure company Rete Ferroviaria Italiana.
The strike was called by the transport union Uilt-Uil amid ongoing disputes over the renewal of national collective labor contracts. Union representatives have also called for improved working conditions and enhanced safety measures for onboard and station personnel.
Passengers planning to travel on the Italo network on Wednesday are advised to expect possible delays and cancellations.
Travelers can check the list of guaranteed services published on Italo’s website to verify the status of their trains. The company also encourages passengers to contact its toll-free information line at 060708 for updates.
Italy’s high-speed rail network is a major link between business and tourism centers such as Milan, Rome and Naples. Disruptions affecting Italo services could place additional pressure on the national rail operator Trenitalia as well as on domestic air travel.
Under Italian law, minimum services must be maintained during weekday commuting hours — from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and again from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. — but departures scheduled outside those windows may be subject to cancellation.
