Starting Monday, the Ariston cinema’s Spazio Underground in Trieste will present a series of screenings that blend classic cinema, contemporary international film and locally produced documentary work, underscoring the venue’s role as a cultural gathering place beyond conventional moviegoing.
The week opens on Monday, January 19, with Celebrity, Woody Allen’s 1998 satire of fame, ambition and media culture. Shown as part of the cinema’s daytime programming, the screening adopts an informal format that pairs film viewing with coffee and pastries, inviting audiences to revisit a late-20th-century portrait of celebrity obsession in a relaxed setting.
On Tuesday, January 20, Spazio Underground will host Un Silenzioso Massacro, a documentary produced in 2025 by students at Trieste’s Liceo Petrarca. Developed in collaboration with local historians, the film examines historical episodes connected to the Friuli Venezia Giulia region that are often overlooked in public discourse. The screening will be introduced by historian Tristano Matta, who will provide historical context for the work.
The week concludes on Wednesday, January 21, with Sirāt, the latest film by Spanish director Óliver Laxe, screened in its original language with Italian subtitles. Following the evening showing, audiences will be able to attend a live-streamed discussion with Laxe and actor Sergi López. The conversation, moderated by journalist Mattia Carzaniga of Rolling Stone, will focus on the film’s themes and creative process, extending the experience beyond the screen.
Together, the week’s programming reflects a broader approach embraced by Spazio Underground, where cinema functions not only as entertainment but also as a platform for dialogue, historical inquiry and engagement with contemporary artistic voices.
