Powerful Bora winds swept across northeastern Italy during the Christmas holiday, forcing emergency crews in the Friuli Venezia Giulia to respond to about 50 incidents related to storm damage, officials said.
Firefighters in Trieste and Gorizia worked through the night of Dec. 25 into Dec. 26 to secure damaged roofs and windows, remove fallen trees and branches, and stabilize signs and other structures dislodged by wind gusts that reached 95 kilometers per hour, according to the regional environmental agency, ARPA.
The heaviest impact was felt across the city of Trieste and in the Monfalcone area, where strong gusts caused widespread damage. Regional civil protection authorities received reports from more than a dozen municipalities across the region, indicating that the storm affected both coastal and inland communities.
The Bora, a cold northeasterly wind common to the northern Adriatic, began to weaken on Friday after three days of intense weather.
