A formal flag-raising ceremony took place Tuesday morning on the Colle di San Giusto, the hill crowned by the city’s cathedral and civic monuments, marking the opening of the “Settimana del Cappello Alpino,” or Alpine Hat Week. The event, held at the piazzale of the Monument to the Fallen, welcomed Alpini troops to Trieste for a week of commemorations and public initiatives.

The program, organized by the Alpine Troops Command in partnership with the National Alpini Association and the City of Trieste, runs through Nov. 15. It features cultural events, educational activities and guided visits designed to highlight the legacy and contemporary role of Italy’s historic mountain infantry corps.

Municipal and regional officials attended the ceremony, including Maurizio De Blasio, Trieste’s councilor for education and family, and Alessia Rosolen, the Friuli Venezia Giulia regional councilor responsible for labor, training, education, research, universities and family policy.

The week will conclude on Saturday, Nov. 15, with a ceremony in Piazza Unità d’Italia, where young volunteer recruits who completed their initial training at the Alpine Training Center in Aosta will receive the iconic feathered Alpine hat — a rite of passage symbolizing their entrance into the corps.

Event program materials were made available by organizers.
