Interview: FVG governor, Massimiliano Fedriga
At a ceremony on Tuesday in Trieste, FVG officials paid tribute to citizens who were deported and forced into labor camps during World War II, awarding posthumous honors to two men who endured Nazi persecution.
The Medaglie d’Onore, or Medals of Honor, were presented to the families of Mario Barbazza and Gaetano Rizzo. The ceremony was held at the Prefecture of Trieste and led by Prefect Giuseppe Petronzi, with Friuli Venezia Giulia’s regional governor Massimiliano Fedriga and Trieste’s deputy mayor Serena Tonel in attendance.
“These ceremonies show that our institutions want to remember those who suffered and sacrificed for our country, but also celebrate the spirit with which they managed to rebuild their lives on solid foundations,” Governor Fedriga said. “It is a great lesson: overcoming suffering and hardship to create something positive for oneself and for the community.”
The Medals of Honor are part of a national initiative to recognize Italian military personnel and civilians who were deported or imprisoned in Nazi concentration camps and forced into labor during the war.
