Torrential rains swept across the Friuli Venezia Giulia region on Wednesday, flooding parts of Trieste prompting an orange-level weather alert.
As forecast, a series of strong thunderstorms brought heavy downpours to much of the region, overwhelming drainage systems and leaving several central streets in Trieste temporarily submerged. Similar scenes unfolded in Grado, a seaside town about 50 miles to the west.
It was the second time in a week that Trieste’s city center experienced flooding after intense rainfall. While the standing water created significant disruptions for pedestrians and traffic, officials reported no major damage or injuries.
Emergency services said they had not received calls requiring intervention from the fire brigade, though crews remained on standby as rain continued to fall intermittently throughout the day.
Meteorologists warned that further showers could persist in the coming days, urging residents to exercise caution in low-lying areas prone to flooding.
