On Sunday, August 10, the city of Trieste observed the 109th anniversary of the death of Nazario Sauro, the Istrian-born patriot executed in 1916. The annual commemoration, organized by the Committee for the Honors to Sauro and the National Association Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia, was held in collaboration with the Municipality of Trieste, local institutions, patriotic and sports associations, and groups representing the communities displaced from the eastern Adriatic territories.
The program began with the laying of flowers at the memorial stone in the Parco della Rimembranza on San Giusto Hill. Boats from the “Nazario Sauro” Merchant Marine Club and the “Saturnia” Rowing Club later entered the San Giusto basin as part of the tribute.
In Piazzale Marinai d’Italia, in front of the Maritime Station, Mayor Roberto Dipiazza joined participants for the laying of a laurel wreath at the monument to Sauro. The ceremony included the reading of his spiritual testament and the official citation for the Gold Medal for Military Valor. Religious blessings and the traditional mariner’s prayer followed.
The event was accompanied by the band of the National Association Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia – Trieste Committee, adding a solemn musical backdrop to the proceedings.
