A violent storm hit the region after 8 p.m. on Thursday, unleashing hailstones as large as the palm of a hand, along with intense rainfall, strong wind gusts, and frequent lightning.
The most severe hail damage was reported in parts of the Pordenone area, including Sacile, Caneva, and Porcia. Streets and gardens were quickly coated in white, with some locations experiencing at least two distinct waves of hail. Witnesses described hailstones several centimeters in diameter—an unusual and striking feature of the storm.
The front moved rapidly eastward overnight, impacting central and eastern areas of the region, including the Bassa Friulana and the coast from Lignano to Trieste. Among the towns affected was Mortegliano, where the storm evoked memories of the destructive event nearly two years ago.
A regional weather alert had been issued earlier in the day, in effect from 8 p.m. Thursday until 4 a.m. Friday.
The storm brought a significant number of lightning strikes and wind gusts strong enough to cause local power outages. Emergency services were dispatched to assess damage, and monitoring continues across affected areas.
