Interviews: Cristina Amirante FVG Councilor for Infrastructure and Territory; Elisa Nannetti, Regional Director of Trenitalia Friuli Venezia Giulia

In a significant move to modernize regional transportation, Trenitalia has completed the renewal of its high-speed regional train fleet on the Trieste–Venice line via Portogruaro, replacing all previous trains with seven new double-decker models.

The announcement was made Friday in Trieste, where Regional Director of Trenitalia Friuli Venezia Giulia, Elisa Nannetti, presented the upgraded fleet to Cristina Amirante, the Regional Councillor for Infrastructure and Territory. Nannetti, whom InTrieste has recently interviewed, emphasized Trenitalia’s long-term investment strategy in the region.

“This renewal is part of a broader plan to improve regional mobility and offer commuters a more comfortable and sustainable travel experience,” Nannetti said.

The modernization is part of a €400 million service contract between Trenitalia and the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. Of that, Trenitalia has directly committed €266.5 million to new rolling stock. The delivery of trains will continue through 2026, with a total of 14 double-decker and 11 single-level hybrid trains. The new trains feature increased capacity for bicycles—18 slots on double-deckers and 12 on hybrid units—as well as luggage racks designed for cruise ship passengers arriving in Trieste.

In tandem with the fleet upgrade, Trenitalia is also launching Tap&Tap, a contactless ticketing system debuting June 14 on the Trieste–Udine line (via Gorizia and Cervignano). Passengers can now validate tickets by simply tapping a contactless card, smartphone, or smartwatch at both departure and arrival stations. The system charges standard second-class fares with no additional fees.

“This innovation is about making regional travel more accessible and intuitive,” Nannetti said, noting that the Miramare stop would soon be included in the Tap&Tap system.

Trenitalia’s Tap&Tap service supports Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and major mobile wallets, marking another step toward digitalization in Italy’s public transit sector.
