Interviews: FVG councilor of infrastructure, Cristina Amirante; Silvia Livoni, bike destination specialist; Elisa Nannetti, director of FVG Trenitalia
The Pedemontana FVG3 cycling route in northeast Italy has seen a surge in popularity among women and younger riders, earning it the 2024 Italian Cycle Tourism Award. The recognition was announced in Trieste during the Green Road Award ceremony, which next year will honor Liguria’s Cycling Riviera.
A report presented at the event found FVG3 to be the third most searched cycling path in Italy this year. “There’s strong interest from millennials and female cyclists,” said Sebastiano Venneri of Legambiente. “They value the signage, safety, and attention to detail.”
The data reflects a nationwide boom in bike tourism, now accounting for 10 percent of Italy’s tourism revenue. Experts credit regions like Friuli Venezia Giulia for embracing intermodality, linking bike paths with trains, buses, and even airports.
“We’re investing in infrastructure to make cycling more accessible and enjoyable,” said Cristina Amirante, regional infrastructure councilor. “This is the future of sustainable travel.”
