As the Junior Alpine Ski World Championships unfold in our scenic Friuli Venezia Giulia region, organizers have faced a formidable challenge: the weather. Over the past six days, unpredictable conditions have tested the resilience of event planners and athletes alike. Yet, despite the adversity, Giorgio Kaidisch, Project Manager for the championships, remains optimistic.
“This last weekend has been really hard because the weather was not helping us,” Kaidisch admitted. “We had to work incredibly hard on the slopes from morning to evening. But we succeeded in delivering all the medals to the athletes, which is the most important thing for us as an organization.”
With clearer skies now gracing the slopes, the championship is progressing smoothly. “Today, everything has changed. The sun is shining, and we hope it stays like this until the end of the event,” he added.
A Global Stage for Friuli Venezia Giulia
Hosting an event of this caliber is no small feat. With young athletes from 60 nations competing at top levels in their disciplines, Tarvisio has become an international hub for alpine skiing. For Friuli Venezia Giulia, the championships represent not only an honor but also a stepping stone toward even greater ambitions.
“This is a big event, and it’s a great opportunity for us,” Kaidisch said. “We see it as a launchpad for much bigger events in the future.”
Looking Ahead: A World Cup on the Horizon?
With the spotlight firmly on the region, could this be the start of a new era for competitive skiing in Tarvisio?
“I hope so. That’s exactly why we took on this event and why we’re doing our best,” Kaidisch said. “It’s also a test for the International Federation. If we do well, we might secure something even bigger.”
That ‘something bigger’ may be just around the corner. “Theoretically, next year we’re going to have a Women’s World Cup here in Tarvisio,” Kaidisch revealed.
For a region that thrives on winter sports and tourism, the potential to host elite-level competitions is an exciting prospect. With a successful championship underway and the possibility of a World Cup event on the horizon, Friuli Venezia Giulia may soon establish itself as a premier destination in the world of alpine skiing.
