On the first Sunday of every month, culture takes center stage in Italy, as museums across the country open their doors for free. Trieste is no exception. On February 2, 2025, the city’s Civic Museums will once again participate in Domenica al Museo (Sunday at the Museum), an initiative sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Culture.

Visitors will have free access to some of Trieste’s most renowned institutions, including the Revoltella Museum—whose full reopening is scheduled for spring 2025 but currently offers complimentary entry to its baronial residence—the historic San Giusto Castle, the Carlo Schmidl Theater Museum, the Diego de Henriquez War for Peace Museum, and the Natural History Museum.

But even beyond this monthly event, several of the city’s cultural landmarks remain free to the public year-round. These include the Museum of the Sea, the Museum of Oriental Art, the Sartorio Museum, the J.J. Winckelmann Antiquities Museum, the Risiera di San Sabba—a solemn memorial site—the Documentation Center of the Basovizza Foiba, and the Museum of the Risorgimento and Oberdan Memorial. Additionally, visitors can enjoy temporary exhibitions at Magazzino 26 at no cost.

However, not all exhibits fall under the initiative. Special exhibitions at the Salone degli Incanti and other ticketed events remain outside the program.

For those eager to explore Trieste’s cultural treasures, this free Sunday presents an ideal opportunity. Information on museum collections and opening hours is available online at triestecultura.it.
