At the start of the summer air travel season, parking areas at Trieste’s main airport have reopened following a yearlong renovation aimed at improving access, capacity and services for passengers.

The upgrades at Trieste Airport, located in Ronchi dei Legionari, were completed in late March, coinciding with the launch of the International Air Transport Association’s summer schedule. The project, which began in March 2025, is part of a broader regional plan backed by Friuli Venezia Giulia to enhance mobility infrastructure, including connections for cyclists and public transport users.

While work on the terminal-side parking facilities is now finished, additional improvements — including a new link between existing cycling paths in Ronchi dei Legionari and San Canzian d’Isonzo — are expected to be completed by May.

The redesign introduces a more structured layout of parking options, with roughly 1,000 spaces available near the terminal for short-, medium- and long-term stays. Airport officials said the changes are intended to better accommodate varying passenger needs, from quick drop-offs to extended travel.

On the intermodal side of the airport, construction is ongoing to expand capacity further. An additional 51 spaces are being added to an open-air lot, bringing its total to just over 1,050, while a nearby multi-level garage with 450 covered spaces remains unchanged.

The airport has also retained incentives aimed at commuters who use public transportation, including free parking for the first 30 minutes and a reduced rate of €1 for up to 12 hours in designated areas. A new online booking system for medium- and long-term parking is being introduced, offering variable pricing depending on the season, along with subscription options for businesses.

A short-term “Kiss & Fly” lane directly in front of the terminal has also been reinstated, allowing free access for up to 15 minutes for passenger drop-off and pickup.

Regional officials described the project as part of a broader effort to strengthen intermodal transport in Friuli Venezia Giulia, where air, rail, road and cycling networks intersect. Cristina Amirante, the region’s councillor for infrastructure and territory, said the diversification of parking options — from short stays to longer-term solutions — is intended to improve traffic flow and accessibility while supporting a more integrated and sustainable mobility system.

Fabio Gallo, the airport’s chief executive, emphasized the role of regional collaboration in funding and executing the upgrades, adding that the improvements are designed to raise standards of efficiency, safety and environmental sustainability while supporting the airport’s role in the regional economy.

The updated parking system includes a range of options: low-cost long-term lots requiring online reservation, medium- and long-term areas within a few minutes’ walk of the terminal, a multi-level covered garage connected by a pedestrian walkway, and short-term spaces directly outside the terminal for quick stops.

Updated pricing and availability are accessible through the airport’s website and at the entrances to each parking area.
