Friuli Venezia Giulia has positioned itself at the forefront of digital innovation, regional officials said Wednesday, 4 February, at the Wired Digital Day in Monfalcone, a forum on technology and innovation organized by the regional government.
Sebastiano Callari, the region’s councillor for Information Systems, highlighted ongoing initiatives, including the high-speed regional broadband network, which has connected public administrations, municipalities, and hospitals across the region. He also noted recent developments in quantum communication, introduced last year at the Universities of Udine and Trieste using the regional fiber-optic network.
“We have invested 4 million euros to further develop quantum computing and continue to support companies looking to invest in this area,” Callari said. “We believe that the future of every territory depends on digital innovation.”
Callari emphasized that managing technological change is a strategic priority for the region, with a focus on turning challenges like artificial intelligence into opportunities for economic and social growth. He warned that rapid technological advancement could overwhelm society if not actively guided and stressed the importance of supporting applied research.
Citing projections from Confindustria, Italy’s leading business association, Callari noted that over one million new professionals will be needed by 2030 to advance the digital transformation. He expressed hope that more young people will engage with these fields and contribute to the development of emerging technologies.
As part of regional efforts to foster interest, Callari highlighted student visits to Insiel, the regional IT company, where they can explore data center operations and learn about the work behind digital messaging systems.
