Friuli Venezia Giulia inaugurated a new regional emergency center in Gemona del Friuli on Friday, marking the start of the 50th-anniversary commemorations of the 1976 earthquake that devastated the region.
The center, named after Giuseppe Zamberletti, houses the regional Civil Protection headquarters and the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (CNSAS). It was developed to strengthen coordination among emergency services across the region.
Regional councillor Riccardo Riccardi said the facility “brings together the different forces that make up the civil protection system” and serves as both a practical investment in emergency preparedness and a symbolic reminder of the region’s reconstruction after the quake.
Barbara Zilli, regional councillor for finance, highlighted Gemona’s central location as strategic for emergency management, noting that the center represents “a new page of history” for the community.
The project was funded by the regional government with an initial €298,100 and an additional €185,000 to complete renovations and upgrades. The opening is part of a series of events planned throughout 2026 to honor the earthquake’s victims and the legacy of the “Friuli Model” of reconstruction.
