After a 15-year absence, World Cup alpine skiing returned to Friuli Venezia Giulia on Friday, drawing international attention to the northeastern mountain town of Tarvisio — and delivering a significant result for Italy.

On the Di Prampero course, Italy’s Nicol Delago claimed victory in the women’s downhill, finishing in 1 minute 46.28 seconds. The skier from Val Gardena edged out Germany’s Kira Weidle-Winkelmann, while American veteran Lindsey Vonn placed third.

The race marked the opening day of the Women’s Alpine Ski World Cup weekend in Tarvisio, an event that places the region back on the global winter sports map at a moment of heightened visibility, with the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics approaching in just a few weeks.
