The 13th edition of the Snow Rugby tournament in Tarvisio concluded this weekend, showcasing not only competitive play but also the enjoyment of the sport and the promotion of the local region. This year, the event set a record with 54 teams participating from across the globe.
Mario Anzil, vice governor of Friuli Venezia Giulia with responsibility for sports, spoke at the awards ceremony, highlighting both the competitive and recreational aspects of the tournament. “This edition demonstrates the authentic principles of sport: certainly competition, but also fun, and a great promotion of our territory,” he said.
On Sunday, the senior men’s and women’s competitions drew the spotlight. The French team LES Minots, a five-a-side squad and former European beach rugby champions, won the men’s title. In the women’s category, the Friulian team Forum Iulii, part of the Forum Iulii RFC competing in Italy’s Serie A women’s rugby championship, emerged victorious. Youth matches for players under 14 were also held, emphasizing the tournament’s focus on fostering rugby’s educational and developmental values among young athletes.
Anzil noted the significance of hosting over fifty teams in Tarvisio. “This is a result the region is particularly proud of, also because this discipline originated here, thanks to Alberto and Mario Stentardo, and has since spread worldwide. The regional administration remains committed to supporting this initiative and hopes to see it grow even further,” he said.
Saturday’s opening day featured the Old Tournament, which included historic rugby teams. Padua’s Old Saints claimed first place, demonstrating both skill and strong sportsmanship throughout the competition.
The tournament was organized by Alp Rugby Tarvisio and held on the snowy slopes of the Golf Club Senza Confini, reinforcing the town’s reputation as a hub for winter rugby and international sports tourism.
