On Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026, residents and visitors in Trieste will be able to step inside many of the city’s most important cultural institutions free of charge, as the city’s Civic Museums take part in #domenicalmuseo, the national initiative promoted by Italy’s Ministry of Culture that offers complimentary admission on the first Sunday of every month.
The program applies to museums that normally require an entrance ticket, including some of Trieste’s best-known landmarks: the Museo Revoltella, the city’s modern art museum; the hilltop Castello di San Giusto; the Carlo Schmidl Theatre Museum; the Diego de Henriquez Museum of War for Peace; and the Natural History Museum.
Alongside these, a number of museums in Trieste are already free year-round. They include the Museo del Mare (Maritime Museum), the Museum of Oriental Art, the Sartorio Museum, the J. J. Winckelmann Museum of Antiquities, the Risiera di San Sabba — the former Nazi concentration camp and memorial — the Documentation Center of the Basovizza Foiba, the Museum of the Risorgimento and Oberdan Shrine, the LETS Literature Trieste center, and the Petrarchesco Piccolomineo Museum. Temporary exhibitions hosted in the exhibition halls of Magazzino 26 are also included in the free-access offer.
Not all exhibitions are part of the initiative. Temporary shows that are not included in a museum’s standard ticket price, as well as the large-scale exhibitions held at the Salone degli Incanti, remain excluded.
Visitors will also have another opportunity to explore Trieste’s museums just two days later. On Tuesday, Jan. 6, all Civic Museums will be open according to their regular schedules and standard admission fees, marking the Epiphany holiday with a full day of cultural programming.
Up-to-date information on opening hours, collections, and exhibitions is available on the individual museum websites and on the city’s cultural portal, triestecultura.it.
