Interview: Michele Babuder, Trieste city councilor for territorial policies

The unveiling of Trieste’s new San Giacomo skate park, scheduled for December 23, was postponed this week after the facility was vandalized just days before its official presentation, city officials said.

The skate park, located in the San Giacomo district, had been promoted by the municipal administration as part of a broader effort to invest in public spaces and youth-oriented infrastructure. Instead, the damaged site has become the subject of an investigation, with repairs now underway to restore the facility before it can be formally opened to the public.

Michele Babuder, the city councillor responsible for territorial policies, said the extent of the vandalism made it impossible to proceed with the planned presentation. “The damage prevents us from presenting the structure in the conditions it deserves,” he said, adding that municipal services moved quickly to assess the situation and begin repairs.

Authorities have not released details about the nature of the vandalism or identified any suspects. Local police are investigating the incident, and city officials have indicated that surveillance footage from the surrounding area is being reviewed.

The skate park was designed to serve as a gathering place for young people in San Giacomo, one of Trieste’s most densely populated neighborhoods. Residents had welcomed the project as a long-awaited addition to the area, which has limited recreational facilities for adolescents and young adults.
