The University of Trieste inaugurated its 2025–26 academic year on Friday, December 5th, emphasizing digital innovation, internationalization and strengthened research efforts.
Italy’s ambassador to France, Emanuela D’Alessandro, was the ceremony’s guest of honor and signed the university’s book of honor before the event opened. Local and regional officials, including Trieste’s mayor Roberto Dipiazza and Friuli Venezia Giulia president Massimiliano Fedriga, delivered opening greetings.
Rector Donata Vianelli outlined the university’s strategic priorities for the year, noting continued growth in both undergraduate and graduate enrollment. She said the institution intends to expand digital services, increase its international partnerships and reinforce links between applied research and technology transfer in the region.
Vianelli also highlighted several challenges, citing global geopolitical tensions, low wages for recent graduates and limited long-term opportunities for research fellows under Italy’s current pre-tenure framework. Addressing these issues, she said, will require “vision and strategy” to ensure stability and competitiveness.
Speeches were also given by Student Council president Morgan Baliviera and staff representative Salvatore Dore. Among the initiatives announced was an expansion of training programs designed not only for students but also for professionals in relevant sectors.
The ceremony marked the beginning of what university leaders described as a year focused on modernization and strengthening the institution’s public role.
