The ski season in Friuli Venezia Giulia is set to begin on Saturday, December 6, with all six regional ski areas expected to open. According to Promoturismo FVG, approximately 30 to 40 percent of lifts and trails will be operational at launch, depending on the location. Detailed information on accessible facilities will be released later this week following a thorough assessment of snow conditions.
Over the past two weeks, the ski runs have been largely covered by artificial snow, aided by cold temperatures and low humidity. This combination has allowed the region’s thousand snow cannons to produce a substantial quantity of machine-made snow. “For a slope to be ready for skiing, there must be a base of at least 30 centimeters of compact snow, with steeper sections requiring even more,” said Fabio Toscan, head of the Tarvisio ski area for Promoturismo FVG.
The production of artificial snow is a significant component of the ski season, accounting for roughly 70 percent of the snow on the slopes. The process follows a detailed plan tailored to each location and costs the regional tourism agency approximately 3 million euros annually to produce 1,125,000 cubic meters of snow.
