The City of Trieste’s library service will offer three guided tours this November of the Sant’Anna Monumental Cemetery, one of the city’s most significant historic burial grounds. The visits, scheduled for Nov. 11, 12 and 19, aim to highlight the site’s cultural, artistic and literary heritage as part of a program funded by the Italian Center for Books and Reading (Cepell). The initiative also pays tribute to Ugo Foscolo, author of I Sepolcri, and coincides with the bicentenary of the cemetery’s founding.
Visitors will meet at the main entrance of the cemetery and are required to reserve in advance by emailing bib.hortis@comune.trieste.it or calling +39 040 675 8412.
The first tour, led by art historian Luca Geroni of the Quarantotti Gambini Municipal Library, will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 11:30 a.m. and will introduce participants to the history of the Catholic cemetery. The walk will focus on the arcaded northern wing, home to some of the oldest and most artistically significant first-class tombs.
On Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 11:30 a.m., Gabriella Norio, head of the Attilio Hortis Civic Library, will guide an itinerary exploring political, historical and scientific memory. The route will include the graves of prominent figures such as intellectuals Domenico Rossetti de Scander, Pietro Kandler and Attilio Hortis; former mayor Gianni Bartoli; members of the Carlist royal family; and scientists including propeller inventor Josef Ressel and astronomer Margherita Hack.
The final tour, led by Riccardo Cepach of the LETS – Trieste Literature Museum, will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 11:30 a.m. Titled “Vero è ben, Pindemonte!,” the visit will trace the city’s literary legacy through the resting places of writers such as Italo Svevo, Umberto Saba, Virgilio Giotti, Giani Stuparich, Anita Pittoni, Carolus Cergoly, Julius Kugy and Boris Pahor. The itinerary also acknowledges Triestine writers buried in neighboring cemeteries or elsewhere, including Giorgio Voghera, Stanislaus Joyce, Pier Antonio Quarantotti Gambini, Scipio Slataper and Fulvio Tomizza.
Additional information is available through the Sant’Anna Cemetery and Civic Library websites or by contacting the Hortis Library.
