Reports of domestic violence, stalking and abuse have risen in Trieste, according to new data released by the city’s municipal police, indicating both an increase in incidents and greater willingness among victims to seek help.

In 2025, authorities have submitted 107 reports to judicial officials, compared with 80 two years ago. The number of individuals reported to law enforcement also rose, reaching 115 this year, up from 98 in 2023.

The figures were presented by Trieste’s dedicated unit for domestic violence and stalking, established in 2020 after Italy strengthened legal protections for victims under the “codice rosso” law. The unit, made up of four trained officers, operates alongside a wider police force that has received additional training in responding to such crimes.

Local officials credited increased outreach and community presence as key factors in helping victims come forward. “Being physically present in the community builds trust,” said Caterina De Gavardo, the city’s councillor for security. “That trust is what allows victims to feel safe enough to talk.”

Under the “codice rosso,” authorities must act quickly, completing initial investigative steps within three days. “We verify reports immediately and confirm statements with victims,” said Vice Commissioner Marco Degrassi.

Alongside domestic violence cases, the unit also handled precautionary measures, suicide-prevention interventions and other safety-related incidents this year.

Despite rising reports, officials cautioned that many victims still hesitate to file formal complaints. “For every case reported, there are many others where victims are still deciding what to do,” Mr. Degrassi said, urging residents to prioritize their safety and seek assistance when needed.
