Trieste officials inaugurated the refurbished gymnasium of the Giotti Stuparich school on Via Rozzol this week, marking the completion of the first phase of an extensive restoration and modernization project.
Elisa Lodi, the city’s Councillor for Public Property and Sports, described the new facility as “a gem,” praising the collaboration between the construction company Omnia Costruzioni S.r.l., school principal Daria Parma, and the municipal technical team led by engineers Elena Clio Pavan, Diego Fabris, and Fabio Cipriani.
“This school complex is undergoing a major operation of structural and functional renewal,” Lodi said. “The project includes seismic and energy upgrades, fire safety improvements, and the removal of architectural barriers. Today, we’re opening a completely renovated gym, the result of an investment of more than €900,000.”
During the renovation period, physical education classes were held in two rented parish halls to ensure that students’ activities continued uninterrupted. Lodi also thanked families for their patience and cooperation, noting that middle school students were temporarily relocated to facilities at Molo Quarto to allow the construction work to proceed safely.
“This gym is a result I’m particularly proud to present to the families,” she said. “The city administration is listening to your needs and committed to providing better schools for today’s and tomorrow’s students.”
According to the city’s technical report, the renovation—launched in July 2024—is part of a three-phase project designed to maintain the continuity of the school’s activities. The first phase focused on the complete refurbishment of the gym and the conversion of the former caretaker’s apartment into a music classroom.
The work included seismic reinforcement through the installation of steel plates and rods, energy improvements with new insulation and window systems, and accessibility upgrades such as ramps and a stairlift. Fire safety measures were brought up to code with new fire-resistant walls and doors, emergency exits, and an updated fire suppression system. The gym floor was refinished, court markings repainted, and new sports equipment installed.
Similar upgrades are now underway in the section of the building housing the Virgilio Giotti primary school, with further work planned for the Carlo Stuparich middle school and the municipal kindergarten.
The entire project is expected to be completed by December 2026. The total cost of the gym renovation was €919,404.29 plus VAT.
Final inspections of the facility were completed between August and October 2025 by engineers Riccardo Schvarcz, Giovanni Basilisco, and Mirko Memo, confirming compliance with structural, fire safety, and accessibility standards.
