Thirteen regional institutions have joined forces in Friuli Venezia Giulia to promote a unified approach to environmental education, signing the newly established “Patto educativo per l’educazione ambientale” at the central office of Arpa FVG in Palmanova on Monday.

The initiative, coordinated by Arpa FVG, aims to consolidate the region’s environmental education network and foster a shared vision for raising awareness about sustainability. Participating organizations include universities, public institutions, natural parks, and museums, all of which have ongoing projects targeting schools and local communities.

Fabio Scoccimarro, the regional councillor for Environment, Energy, and Sustainable Development, described the pact as “a collective, concrete commitment to build a common vision of environmental education across Friuli Venezia Giulia. Sustainability is not a slogan; it is a responsibility that requires institutions to work together consistently to prepare citizens for current and future environmental challenges.”

The pact’s development began in October 2024, led by Arpa FVG director Anna Lutman, with monthly meetings among participating entities to define objectives and coordinated actions. The resulting agreement is designed as a dynamic, long-term tool, incorporating working groups, joint events, training sessions, and ongoing dialogue to promote widespread environmental awareness.

Scoccimarro emphasized that collaboration has already produced tangible outcomes in the region, from energy transition and decarbonization strategies to sustainable water and biodiversity management. “Today, we add a key component: educating and sensitizing the next generation and local communities, because environmental culture forms the foundation of a fairer and more sustainable future,” he said.

The first initiative under the pact was the recently concluded Environmental Education Days in FVG, which featured more than 30 events across the region focused on immersive experiences in nature.

Future actions include joint promotion of the pact, regular meetings to share projects and experiences, collaborations organized by territorial macro-areas, training programs for educators and nonprofit operators, a shared regional calendar of events, and the creation of a dedicated online portal on the Arpa FVG website.

Among the signatories present was Daniela Beltrame, director of the Regional School Office for Friuli Venezia Giulia. Other institutions involved include the universities of Udine and Trieste, the Ente Tutela Patrimonio Ittico, the Dolomiti Friulane and Prealpi Giulie Natural Parks, the National Institute of Oceanography and Experimental Geophysics (OGS), and several regional natural history museums and marine protected areas, including the WWF-managed Area Marina Protetta di Miramare.
