After weeks of mild temperatures and calm conditions, Friuli Venezia Giulia is bracing for a return of heavy rain and strong winds, as an Atlantic weather system moves across northern Italy starting Monday, October 20.
According to meteorologist Federico Brescia of iLMeteo.it, an “intense and wide-ranging Atlantic disturbance” is set to bring thunderstorms, gusty winds, and significant rainfall to much of northern and central Italy early in the week, before shifting southward.
The first signs of the change are expected Monday afternoon, when clouds will thicken across the region, with light rain possible, particularly in the eastern areas.
The worst of the weather, however, is forecast for Tuesday, October 21, when widespread rain is expected across Friuli Venezia Giulia. Moderate precipitation is likely in the western areas and along the Alps, while heavier rain — possibly accompanied by thunderstorms — could affect the eastern part of the region, especially between the coast and the Julian Prealps. Coastal winds from the south are expected to strengthen, possibly leading to rough seas and local flooding.
By Wednesday, October 22, conditions are expected to briefly improve, though skies will remain mostly cloudy and light rain may persist in the eastern parts of the region. Morning fog is also possible in low-lying areas.
A new round of unstable weather could return by Thursday, October 23, with the possibility of coastal storm surges and strong winds along the Adriatic.
Meteorologists warn that temperatures — which have been unusually high for mid-October — will drop sharply as the cold front passes through northern Italy, while southern regions and the major islands will continue to experience unseasonably warm conditions until later in the week.
