Interview: Fabio Scoccimarro, Regional Councilor for the Environment, Energy, and Sustainable Development

The 57th edition of the Barcolana regatta, held in the Gulf of Trieste, features the continued participation of Arpa FVG (the Regional Environmental Protection Agency of Friuli Venezia Giulia), which inaugurated its information stand today in Piazza Unità.

The event was attended by Fabio Scoccimarro, Regional Councilor for the Environment, Energy, and Sustainable Development; Barcolana President Mitja Gialuz; and Arpa FVG’s Technical and Scientific Director, Fulvio Stel.

From its central location in the Barcolana Village, Arpa FVG will showcase its environmental monitoring and research activities, offering visitors a closer look at the agency’s work across the region. Throughout the week, the agency will also host meteorology and climatology workshops for local schools and collaborate with students from Trieste’s Nautical Technical Institute.

The initiative coincides with the regional Environmental Education Days, during which RAI Friuli Venezia Giulia will conduct an interview at the agency’s stand.

As part of the Barcolana Sea Summit on Thursday, October 9, Arpa FVG will present its involvement in the cross-border project IT-HR “Undersea”, which focuses on underwater noise pollution. The agency will also introduce IT-SLO “Heatislands Adapt”, a project aimed at studying and mitigating urban heat islands.

Arpa FVG’s meteorologists will once again provide technical weather support to Barcolana’s Sports Directorate and the Trieste Port Authority, ensuring safe conditions at sea. Daily “weather points,” shared on social media around noon, will offer the latest forecasts throughout the regatta.

With its blend of science, education, and public outreach, Arpa FVG’s presence continues to be an essential element of Barcolana, supporting both environmental awareness and maritime safety during one of the world’s largest sailing events.
