On Sunday, October 5, at 9 a.m., families will gather in Aurisina, a village set on the limestone plateau above Trieste, for a guided exploration of the region’s distinctive karst landscape. The event, titled In Carso tra grotte e doline, alla scoperta di un geomondo (“In the Karst among caves and sinkholes, discovering a geo-world”), invites children and young people—accompanied by their parents—to take part in a four-kilometer “geocaccia,” or geocaching adventure.

Organized by the Geological Service of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region in collaboration with the Civic Museum of Natural History of Trieste, the cooperative Curiosi di Natura, and the Naturalistic Education Center of Basovizza, the initiative is designed to spark curiosity about geology through hands-on discovery. Participants will follow a map leading them through the rugged karst terrain to the Pocala Cave, a geosite notable for its rich paleontological finds. Along the way, guided by geopark experts, children will search for fossils and unusual rock formations, take measurements, and solve quizzes. Each young “geo-explorer” will receive a small prize at the journey’s end.

The excursion is part of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s Environmental Education Days and the national “Week of Planet Earth,” a program of scientific outreach activities held across Italy. The event will be conducted in both Italian and Slovenian and is free of charge, though registration is required.

The meeting point is the Kulturni dom Igo Gruden cultural center in Aurisina. For information and registration, participants may contact the organizers at curiosidinatura@gmail.com or +39 340 556 9374.
