To mark the 300th anniversary of the birth of Giacomo Casanova (1725–1798), the city is hosting a joint program that connects two exhibitions devoted to the Venetian writer, adventurer and traveler whose life intersected with the Adriatic and beyond.

On Thursday, Sept. 11, visitors will be guided through Casanova in viaggio. Porti e approdi dall’Adriatico al Levante, on view at the Museo Irci in Via Torino, and Casanova in viaggio. L’approdo a Trieste at the Civico Museo Petrarchesco Piccolomineo in Via Madonna del Mare.

The tour begins at 5:30 p.m. at Museo Irci, where curator Marina Parladori will introduce the exhibition tracing Casanova’s journey along the Adriatic coast, with stops in Istria and Dalmatia. At 6:30 p.m., the program continues at the Museo Petrarchesco Piccolomineo. There, Alessandra Sirugo will explore Casanova’s stay in Trieste between November 1772 and September 1774, highlighting 11 rare editions of his works and several international political articles published in the Osservatore triestino. These materials, normally housed in the Biblioteca Hortis, are being presented to the public for the occasion.

The initiative is the result of a collaboration between the city museums and Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, specifically the Department of Comparative Linguistic and Cultural Studies under the direction of Antonio Trampus.

The exhibitions bring together documents, prints, paintings, maps and objects connected to Casanova’s multifaceted legacy — as a writer, adventurer, traveler and, at times, secret agent. Admission to the guided tour is free.

Further information can be found through the Museo Petrarchesco Piccolomineo’s official channels, including museopetrarchesco.it.
