The fourth edition of “Diabete a Ruota Libera,” a three-day non-competitive cycling event aimed at raising awareness about diabetes and healthy living, will conclude on Sunday, September 7, with the arrival of dozens of cyclists in Piazza Unità d’Italia. The group is expected to reach the city’s main square at 4:50 p.m.
The initiative, organized by the Coordinamento Regionale Associazioni Diabetici Friuli Venezia Giulia (CRAD FVG Odv), was presented Thursday at the Civic Museum of Oriental Art. Among those in attendance were Giorgio Rossi, Trieste’s councilor for culture and tourism, Riccardo Candido, a diabetologist with the regional health authority Asugi, and a delegation from CRAD.
“The organizations that make up this network are an essential resource in supporting public health and protecting vulnerable citizens,” Rossi said, noting the city’s institutional support for the event. He encouraged residents to join the final gathering in Piazza Unità, describing it as an opportunity to share “a positive message of prevention.”
This year’s ride takes place September 5–7, covering routes through some of the most scenic towns and landscapes in northeastern Italy and Slovenia. Participants will travel by bicycle as well as on foot, with optional six-kilometer hikes offered each day. The route begins in Conegliano, passes through Pordenone, Gemona, Udine, Gorizia and Grado, before ending in Trieste.
The initiative combines recreational activity with education, highlighting the role of exercise in managing diabetes and improving quality of life. Organizers emphasize that recent advances in medical technology and treatment now allow many people living with the condition to engage in sports safely.
“Diabete a Ruota Libera” is designed as an inclusive event, open to cyclists of all ages and abilities. Participants can join with traditional bicycles or e-bikes, making the ride accessible for those with different levels of fitness or physical limitations.
The central theme of the 2025 edition is raising awareness of diabetes and its complications while promoting strategies for prevention and care. By linking sport and health, organizers hope to encourage a culture of active living and community support.
Over the course of three days, cyclists will cover nearly 230 kilometers:
- September 5: Conegliano to Pordenone (75 km)
- September 6: Gemona del Friuli to Gorizia (90 km)
- September 7: Grado to Trieste (65 km)
The arrival in Piazza Unità is expected to draw participants, families and supporters for a public celebration centered on solidarity, information and shared experience.
