Heavy rainfall Friday morning caused the Menariol stream in Muggia, near Trieste, to overflow, prompting local authorities to close road access to part of a shopping center and step up monitoring of nearby waterways.

The lower entrance to the Arcobaleno shopping center in Rabuiese was temporarily closed after water pooled on the roadway, municipal officials said. Civil protection teams and city workers also installed flood barriers in the coastal locality of Vignano, equipment previously acquired by the town of Muggia to counter high water levels in the Mandracchio area. The barriers, officials reported, helped prevent damage to nearby homes.

Local police and Mayor Paolo Polidori were present at the scene as crews continued to monitor the situation. Authorities said inspections would remain in place throughout the day, with additional rainfall forecast for the afternoon.
